Google has announced to have taken over Tonic Systems, which is a company that made tools for document management and presentations. Google bought TS but the price they paid is still unknown. With the purchase of TS, Google has now got a complete office package consisting of: Google Mail, Google Docs & Spreadsheet and Google Apps Premier, which is a presentation program like Microsoft Powerpoint. Now Google has the ability to start competition with Microsoft.
This purchase is a next step towards what I believe will be total OS. Google is trying to buy as many programs as they can to create a wide inventory of programs. The idea is to create an online operating system which contains all programs a user needs. There are many speculations about Google creating an OS, but Google never gave into it. My opinion is that Google wants to keep this information for themselves, which is very clever if you are trying to be ahead of your competition.
My guess is that when Google has enough programs to be a complete OS, there will be the chance to create accounts and put all your work and personal files online. There will be a giant workspace for all the users and you can locate your files on every computer for all your work will be online.
